Maple Class - Term 4 week 6
Date: 4th Apr 2025 @ 8:57pm
6 weeks down and less than 1 more to go! This has felt like a long term, especially with the clock change, but the sunny weather has certainly helped and we've been making the most of it in Maple class.
This week we have we have continued to look at life cycles and we had two book focuses this week – The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle and Pip and Egg by Alex Latimer. We have created our own butterfly lifecycles as well as doing observational drawings of butterflies. This lead us into discussing what symmetry means, which then lead us into creating our own wonderful symmetrical butterfly printing pictures, well done Maple class.
In maths we have been taking away from 8 and recording taking away from 8. Children bought different objects with 8p and worked out how much they had left (using 1p coins). We also looked at decomposing 2D shapes into other shapes (to break it apart into other smaller, and sometimes different, shapes).
In Phonics we have been going over the Phase 3 sounds we have recently been learning. This week we went over j, v, w, x, y, z, zz, qu, ch, sh, th, ng, ai, ee. We have also been thinking about our Phase 2 tricky words (I, no, go, the, to) and have been practising spelling these. We have been writing lots of words and captions containing these sounds. Children have enjoyed the new writing table which has been put in our story telling area and have been busy writing notes, letters and stories in this area.
In RE this week we have continued to think about the Easter Story and the significance of Easter Gardens. Children created their own Easter gardens during Explore and Learn time, they could choose any resources and we saw wonderful creativity using lego, duplo, mobilo and junk.
In Forest School we found two sticks of different lengths and then joined these together using twine to make our own crosses. These will be used next week to create a Maple Easter garden using the grass we have been growing in the tuff tray – we have loved watching this grow! In Forest School we also had a tidy up of the forest area, collecting up any broken pots and rubbish and odd sticks and wood for the fire pit. We also loved looking at the pond and found some frogs and frogspawn, what excitement there was! We can’t wait to see the frogspawn change into tadpoles.
As you know, we sent home the cress and grass heads we have been growing in Maple – how wonderful these are! We have loved watching them grow. At first we weren’t sure the grass was going to grow, then once it sprouted it really did go wild. We have been enjoying watching our runner bean seeds grow too – we have been observing the roots getting longer and longer. These will be coming home next week for you to look after over the Easter holidays!
We finished this week with PSED and read the book Elmer the Patchwork Elephant by David McKee. We thought about why he wanted to be like all the other elephants, but actually how it is brilliant to all be different and unique.
Well done to Frankie, Felix and Sophie who all got awarded certificates in our Celebration assembly this week.
Have a wonderful weekend and enjoy the sunshine.
