Maths
Ampney Crucis C of E Primary School
“Together we all live, learn and flourish.”
The subject lead for Maths is Mr Gavin Pugh.
Vision
Mathematics is an important creative discipline that helps us to understand and change the World. We want all pupils at Ampney Crucis to experience the beauty, power and enjoyment of mathematics and develop a sense of curiosity about the subject.
At Ampney Crucis, we foster positive ‘can do’ attitudes, believe all children can achieve in mathematics, and teach for secure and deep understanding of mathematical concepts. We use mistakes and misconceptions as an essential part of learning and provide challenge through rich and sophisticated problems before acceleration through new content.
Curriculum Intent: Skills
We aim for all pupils to:
+ From EYFS and throughout KS1 we make sure that all children have a strong number sense through lessons, small group work and continuos provision so they have a great start to their maths journey at our school.
+ Become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics (see Year by Year Curriculum Maps) so that they develop conceptual understanding and the ability to recall and apply knowledge rapidly and accurately.
+ Solve problems by applying their mathematics to a variety of problems with increasing sophistication, including in unfamiliar contexts and to model real-life scenarios.
+ Reason mathematically by following a line of enquiry and develop and present a justification, argument or proof using mathematical language.
+ Have an appreciation of number and number operations, which enables mental calculations and written procedures to be performed efficiently, fluently and accurately.
The school is part of the GLOW maths hub, and through GLOW we continually work along other schools and the NCETM to make sure all the children at Ampney Crucis have a can do attitude to maths.
We are also part of the NCETM Mastering Number projects at KS1 and 2 which aim to improve children's knowledge, understanding and fluency in early number and times tables.
For 2024-25 we are an Nrich Problem Solving school. This means that as a school we are focussed on developing the children's problem solving skills in maths and all the children will have lots of opportunities to develop their problem solving skills.
