Term 2, week 2 - Friday 15th November

Date: 15th Nov 2024 @ 9:55pm

What a busy second week of term we've had, ending with lots of little Superheroes in Maple class for Children in Need.

This week we started the week with commemorating Remembrance Day, we thought about this a lot last week and held up the poppies we made.

Our book focus this week has been Little Red Riding Hood, we talked about the characters and what a hero is.  We used story props to retell the story, packed our own basket of food for Grandma.

In phonics it was assessment week, so we recapped all our level 2 sounds and during Explore and Learn time took part in several activities to help us consolidate our learning, using the ipads to take part in Phonics Play activities, play Buried Treasure game – reading real and alien words, matching CVC words to their pictures, completing alphabet puzzles (we have been amazing at singing the alphabet song) and practicing our letter formations on paper.

In maths we have been looking at the number 8, doing lots of counting onto a tens frame, exploring the numicon and also making spiders and octopuses, ensuring they had the correct number of legs and tentacles.  We also started to explore length, and in forest school we compared the lengths of different sticks, and also different objects we found in the classroom.

In Forest School this week children had the challenge on the way to the forest area to collect 8 different leaves of different colours.  We then explored colour mixing and children were encouraged to mix paint to make the different leaf colours they found.  Children also enjoyed weaving using wool and curtain rings, then finding items in the forest they could weave into the wool.  Lots of children loved exploring the mud kitchen, and a small group of children worked together to make apple pies for Father Christmas! It was a very busy session, and as you know from how your children came home from school, they had lots of rather messy fun!  The swing in the forest area is always a big hit, as is climbing the trees.

We ended the week by looking at light and shadows, we talked about how shadows are created. We enjoyed making our own shadow puppet theatre.

Have a lovely weekend.
