Term 2, week 3 - Friday 22nd November
Date: 22nd Nov 2024 @ 9:34pm
What an exciting week we have had with the arrival of some snow on Tuesday. The children were, as you can imagine, so excited, and with the weather turning so much colder, children were intrigued with the changes they could see outside. They were particularly interested in all the ice which was discovered in our outdoor area and lots of talk was about how long it would take to melt. On Thursday, they were most excited to discover the sea creatures had been frozen into the Tuff Tray, and immediately set about how they could set them free! We saw brilliant team working and amazing discussions.
Our book focus this week has been Supertato. We looked at different vegetables and made our own Supertatos at the end of the week, using beetroot juice to dye pieces of fabric for his cape. We compared vegetables and their lengths and enjoyed looking closely at the vegetables.
In phonics we have been practicing reading and writing CVC words which contain ‘a’ as the middle grapheme. We’ve also been doing lots of writing, writing our Christmas lists to Santa, thinking about the initial sounds of words and trying our very best to use our phonic knowledge to sound out words.
In maths we have continued to concentrate on the number 8, counting onto a number track, counting out dried peas, and also counting beats we were making on the instruments. We have been noticing the number 8 everywhere. We also used cubes to measure length and used them to measure our feet and compare them. We discovered the shortest feet in the class were 7 cubes long and the longest feet were 12 cubes long.
This week we saw the arrival of the book fair at school. On Friday we looked at the story we focused on last week, Little Red Riding Hood, and drew a class story map to retell the story. Children then had a go at drawing their own. These were then taken to Mrs McKay who had the very hard task of judging a winner. The winner was Octaviah, who won a £5 voucher to spend at the book fair. Well done Octaviah, but all children had a brilliant go and came up with some wonderful story maps.
In forest school this week we wrapped up warm and spent the afternoon outside in the sunshine. We had a fantastic time. We loved swinging on the swing, role playing in the dens and mud kitchen, making custard pies, making book marks using things found in the forest area and sticking them onto a bookmark. We also very carefully used the hammer to hammer nails into a pumpkin. We were all so busy and could have spent longer in the forest! The afternoon zoomed by.
We hope you all have a lovely weekend and look forward to seeing you back in Maple next week.
